Dental PFM crown/ Dental porcelain fused to metal crown with good
Porcelain fused to metal dental crowns is one of dentistry's
primary restorations of choice because, when properly constructed
and seated, they are strong, reliable and esthetic and a good
choice for either front or back teeth. These crowns are strong
enough to withstand heavy biting force, and at the same time can
have an excellent cosmetic appearance.
It's easy enough to imagine circumstances where a person would
prefer a tooth-colored crown instead of a metallic one. But you
might wonder what the advantages of a porcelain-fused-to-metal
restoration are over their all-ceramic counterparts. They are:
a) Greater strength.
The metal substructure of a PFM crown gives it greater strength
than an all-ceramic. PFM's have a long track record of providing
durable and lasting service. (Onlyall-metal crownsare superior in this regard.)
b) A more precise fit.
A PFM's metal substructure achieves a more exact fit over its tooth
than an all-ceramic. Admittedly, at a practical level this may only
be of limited concern. But at least in theory, the less dependence
the tooth/crown relationship has on its weakest link (the cement in
between) the better.
